WE ALL HAVE THOSE DAYS WHEN WE DON’T FEEL LIKE DOING MUCH OF ANYTHING.
then there are the days where we want to work, but sometimes struggle with getting started.
often staring at a blank piece of paper hoping for the words come.
lots of scratch outs.
up and til we are at the point of just giving up for the day and trying again tomorrow.
and while this is okay from time to time, if you don’t work you don’t eat for those of us who have made blogging full-time,
thus, shit must get done.
so today i share with you my five ways to get those creative juices flowing.
Explore your city.
i am ashamed to say, not really (but for the sake of dramatics lets pretend that i am); i am, ashamed to say that i have been a Birmingham resident for over 10 years now and not once have i explored all that it has to offer.
few weeks ago, in this 90 degree weather, i parked my car downtown somewhere between 19th st and 20th st n, i walked for a good two hours taking photos of random things i deemed beautiful, falling in love with a city i had for years expressed hate for, not because of my time here (well maybe a little, but that’s another story for another day), but simply because it was not home for me.
Dallas was all that I knew and had known
up until my parents decided to move my senior year of high school.
now I’m having to go to prom and graduate with people I barely know,
however, here it is 10 years later.
and i work here.
i live here.
my daughter was born here.
my friends are here.
i completed college here.
being here on my own, birmingham forced me to glow up
and whenever someone asks me why didn’t i just leave or move back
i always answer
because my life is here.
this is home, right?
baby steps, lol.
Read your favorite blogs.
of course its no secret that creatives are often inspired by other creatives.
or people, places and things in general.
so why not take the time to catch up on some of your favorite blogs.
here are a couple of my favorites:
Make it a girls night
now anybody who knows me, knows that i’m not much of a drinker.
and for the sake of image, well just keep that story under wraps lol
but we all know that nothing pleases the soul more than good food, good drinks and heartfelt laughter with the ones we love.
so call up your girls
and laugh til your heart is content.
or do it the old fashion way and have a good ol’ girls night in.
and lots of tea.
that’s all you need.
read a book
i have always enjoyed reading.
i don’t know about you, but the scholastic book fair was always the highlight of my school year and don’t get me started on how much i enjoyed reading babysitters club!
however, we are adults now and somewhere in the unwritten rules we are required to read something that is a bit more thought provoking and conscientious to the soul
…although, i may or may not still enjoy a children’s book (but, i’m a mom, so its okay lol)
here are some of my favorite reads:
girlboss by sophia amoruso
you are a badass by jen sincero
power of a praying woman by stormie omaritian
year of yes by shonda rhimes
so grab your favorite blanket.
curl up on the couch or in bed (which ever you prefer)
order you up some pizza.
and enjoy thumbing through the pages of your book.
taking in that new book smell.
allowing each word to vividly paint pictures into the forefront of your mind.
make it a movie night
anybody who knows me, knows that i enjoy going to the movies.
i love popcorn.
it is a food group in my household.
and sometimes serves as a complete meal, for me, on those “i’m hungry, but not really” kind of nights.
one movie that really gets me going believe it or not is:
single mom’s club by tyler perry
one if, not all, will get you on your way to doing the shit that needs to do get done.
til next time
